Dice throwing “game” for Nokia 5800

My kids weren’t impressed by the sensor test so I tried to make it more interesting by adding more dimensions. Many Nokia phones implement 3D acceleration and it seems that Nokia 5800 isn’t an exception. update I guess there isn’t a dedicated chip on board, but for our purposes the rendering is plenty fast. It’s been a long time since I’ve done matrix calculations, but I managed to get a dice rolling with some textures. The physics of dice rolling are faked, because it would propably take me better part of the year even to come close. The dice is always rotated same way, but the amount is taken from the current speed of the dice and multiplied with magic numbers. I didn’t quite get the effect I wanted, but this was another three hour project and I didn’t want to spend too much time on it.

Anyhow here it is Dice rolling game:
SensorTestVgl.sisx

Settings:
try the settings out, I set them to fairly reasonable values, range of the values is pretty much between 0 – 1.0. No checking for bad values is done so it is possible to get division by zero or something strange. Values are not stored, so restarting the application will reset everything.

Application keeps running in the foreground and doesn’t let the light go out so it will drain battery if left on top. It should be ok in the background, but I haven’t made any measurements.

World Snooker Championship 09 3D for Nokia 5800 and S60 5th Edition

Here a nice game for all snooker fans among you. World Snooker Championship 09 3D is a freeware game for the 5800 Xpress Music and is developed by I-Play. The graphics is really impressive and is as good as the touch response. However, the text is really small so that I recommend you using the stylus. The first time playing isn’t easy but due to the tips and hints you will get an idea of the game soon. As already mentioned the game is freeware so go ahead and download the game to become the next champion.

How to Change Fonts on Nokia 5800

There are two parts to this tutorial. The first part is for those with v11 firmware. The second part is for those with v20 firmware. Just a quick reminder though, when you change your font on your phone it also affects the font displayed on your web browser. So you might want to choose a suitable font to go with your phone.

Nokia 5800 - v11 firmware

01 01 03

Download Font

  1. Connect your Nokia 5800 using mass storage. Alternatively you can use a card reader.
  2. Browse through your memory card and look for the folder called “Resource”
  3. Copy the ‘Fonts’ folder into in. (Download links to Sample font above)
  4. Eject the memory card and restart your phone. The new fonts will take effect.

Alternatively you can use your own custom fonts. What you need is the font file in the .ttf format.

  1. Create a folder called “Fonts” and copy your .ttf font file into it.
  2. Make 4 copies of the same file and rename them to
    • s60snr.ttf
    • s60ssb.ttf
    • s60tsb.ttf
    • S60ZDIGI.ttf
  3. Repeat the same procedure as above (copy the Fonts folder into the Resource folder in your memory card.
  4. Restart your phone and the new fonts should take effect.

Nokia 5800 - v20 firmware

It is the same procedure as above however only 3 files need to be created in the following names:

  • s60sc_c.ttf
  • s60tchk_c.ttf
  • S60ZDIGI.ttf

Copy the Fonts folder to Resource folder and yes a restart is required…

How do I change back to my default fonts?

It is even easier to revert back to the original fonts. To do that, just browse to your memory card and delete the “Fonts” folder which you created in the “Resource” folder. Restart your phone and voila, it is back to the original font.

Nokia 5800 Original Themes in Black, Red, or Blue

If you just bought a Nokia 5800, you might have one of the 3 available colors, Red, Black, or Blue. Each came with their own specific colored theme. If you want to see how the other colors look on your Nokia 5800 look no further and download it here.

Nokia 5800 Original

Download: Black, Red, Blue

I bought a Nokia 5800 NAM which only currently comes in black, so I’m glad to have these default themes in other colors. I like the red one!

Google Translator Widget For Symbian 3rd&5th Devices

Google Translator Widget For Symbian 3rd&5th Devices

Google Translator widget is a free software for Nokia S60, powerful and easy-to-use multilingual translation interface that uses the Google translation engine and satisfies your translation needs on the go.

Similar to its web based translation service, the Google Translation widget for S60 devices translates a section of text into another language. While using the service, widget auto detects the source language and you only need to select the language in which it will be translated to, enter the section of text and click the go button.

Top 10 Apps worth buying for S60V5 Edition phones

It may be early days for this variant of S60, and of course many S60 3rd Edition commercial applications work fine too (though they won’t be optimised for the new screen resolution(s) and touch), but if you own a compatible smartphone, which applications should you be willing to dip into your wallet for? Which are the best, in terms of both quality and value?

1. Gravity

No surprises here, Gravity has received rave reviews (including here on AAS) and has an exemplary interface. Gravity is a Twitter client, letting you post updates (tweet) and receive updates from all your friends and contacts.

Gravity  Gravity

Buy it here. Cost: £7

2. WorldMate Pro

This item’s cheating to a degree because WorldMate straddles the worlds of freeware and commercial software. By default, you get a slick and free utility, offering weather forecasts, a currency converter and world clock. But then pay the commercial premium (go ‘gold’) and you get real time flight status and alerts, flight schedules and satellite imagery for weather. If you’re a regular traveller then this becomes a time and money saver and will easily pay for itself.

Buy it here. Cost:$30 a year

3. Twittix

It’s yet another Twitter client and isn’t quite so pretty, but can’t be ignored because it offers much of the functionality of Gravity at 60% of the price.

Buy it here. Cost: $7

4. ZingMagic Backgammon Pro II/Chess

Another cheat, in that I’m listing two separate games. but I’m guessing that you’ll prefer one over the other, so pick the one you’re better at. As usual, the ZingMagic games are slick and friendly to your phone’s OS. The price is a little high, but then each will give hundreds of hours of gameplay and fun, so….

Buy Chess Pro II here. Buy Backgammon Pro II here. Cost: $15 each

5. Handy Safe Pro

I hesitate to suggest this application, in view of the cost, but you still can’t beat the way it syncs all its data seamlessly to a fully functioning Windows desktop version, right down to record level. Used properly, this can hold all the secrets of your life, in a maintainable and easy-to-backup fashion. And you can’t really put a price on that, surely?

S60 5th Edition Top 10 screenshot

Buy it here. Cost:$35

6. OfficeSuite

Yet again there’s a caveat. This time because MobiSystems seem to have rushed their office editing suite to market. It’s buggy, but at least they know it’s buggy and are working on it. And it’s on special offer at the moment, so I recommend you buy it now and then take advantage of the fixes as and when they come along.

S60 5th Edition Top 10 screenshot

Buy it here. Cost:$20 (usually a whopping $60)

7. Resco Bubbles

One of the better and trickier accelerometer games, this one’ll have you tearing your hair out. In a good way. The screenshot’s self-explanatory, but the game’s harder than it looks. Persevere past the weird setup interface.

Buy it here [link coming soon]. Cost: $10

8. Can’t Stop Solitaire

Horrifically expensive by modern standards, for a humble game, this solitaire collection has almost infinite interest and playability, and deserves a recommendation on this alone. Over two hundred card solitaire variants are here, so something for everyone.

S60 5th Edition Top 10 screenshot

Buy it here. Cost: $30

9. Handy Shell

Epocware’s vision for what the Symbian home screen should look like, you’ll either love this or hate it. There’s no denying the number of apps represented, plus you get another three optional ‘views’, plus a year’s worth of weather, but it’s a;; rather overkill for the average user. Still, perfect for the road warrior!

S60 5th Edition Top 10 screenshot

Buy it here. Cost: $20

10. Best TaskMan

Think of this as the built-in S60 ‘Open Applications’ list on steroids. You get extra views, including the all important ‘free RAM’ figure, plus detailed info on how much RAM each application and process is using, a must for geeky troubleshooting.

Nokia N97 Video Walk Through By Tnkgrl

tnkgrl got hold of Nokia N97 at CTIA and has made an amazing 15 minute long walk through video of the device with Julien Fourgeaud of Nokia explaining some of the features of the device and how Mobile Computing is the next revolution. Following is what tnkgrl had to say,

n97

Compared to the 5800 XpressMusic, and beyond the hardware differences, the software on the N97 adds kinetic scrolling, two standby screens (one with widgets, like FaceBook and Bloomberg), and lots of other improvements highlighted in the video.

Despite the being resistive on the N97 (vs. capacitive on the Omnia HD), the touchscreen is extremely responsive. This, combined with the hardware keyboard, makes for a great user experience - I can’t wait to get my hands on the final product
